Online travel company Expedia removed American Airlines from its flight searches this weekend. The action is the culmination of a series of disagreements between the airline and online travel booking companies over fees. Peer recommendations have overtaken specialist knowledge as a make-or-break point for online purchases. A new study shows the same process is taking place in travel, and even within the online sphere peer-to-peer reviews have more heft than the authority of travel experts.
The study, by World Travel Market, in advance of this month's conference in London, found that social media is still not a majority tool in planning and making travel purchases, but that it is a factor. Google announced this afternoon that it has paid $700 million in cash to acquire ITA Software, a flight information software company.
Founded in the mid-1990s at MIT, ITA's technology provides organization of flight price and schedule information for the major airlines and travel booking companies.
