Amazon LogoAmazon’s Simple Storage Service, S3, went down on Sunday in the U.S. & Europe. According to e-trailer’s Service Health Dashboard Both localities experienced “elevated error rates”. The ‘S3’ service went down last February also but the company explained the cause a few days later.

According to CenterNetworks, its images were broken due to it and they had to move back the style sheet so that the site delivers properly. Their website reads:

Amazon’s S3 storage service appears to be down. CenterNetworks images are broken because of it and I had to move the style sheet back so the site at least renders correctly. Sites like Twitter have massive broken images currently because Amazon S3 is down.

SmugMug also reported problem in their stored photos and videos:

Amazon’s S3 service, SmugMug’s primary storage provider, is currently experiencing problems.  As a result, a large portion of the photos and videos stored on SmugMug are currently offline.

However they did sympathize with the service:

Historically, Amazon has been very stable.  We’ve seen three of these in our entire history with Amazon (>2 years), including this one.  I expect, like the last two, that service will be restored shortly.  You can keep track of their efforts over on their own Status Dashboard.

The important thing is that they’re few and far between, short, and handled properly.  Every component SmugMug has ever used, whether it’s networking providers, datacenter providers, software, servers, storage, or even people, has let us down at one point or another.

S3, the online storage service was launched publicly in 2006.

The service is back now and following are the latest updates regarding its status:

2:36 PM PDT We have restored all internal communication across Amazon S3 hosts. We have started the multi-step process to begin accepting requests across Amazon S3 locations.

5:25 PM service in both the US and EU has been fully restored. We appreciate your patience. We will provide more detail on this event once we have completed a full investigation.
